Nothern Nigeria The Story: A History Of Nothern Nigeria

Historical Background

Northern Nigeria the established home of Nigerian politics, has a land mass that covers more than half the country thats 660.000km2 out of the 993.000km2 which is about 70%, the region also has a population density of about 75, 392, 522 people. Northern Nigeria is divided into three sub-regions, North-central: Benue, FCT, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, Niger and Plateau. North-east: Bauchi, Adamawa, Gombe, Borno, Taraba and Yobe. North-west: Kaduna, Kastina, kano, Kebbi, Sokoto, Jigawa, Zamfara. The lanquage been spoken is predominalty Hausa but other languages such as Kanuri, Fulani, Berom and Tangale e.t.c are used, most notherners dress in caftans, the women were blouse and skirts, but a large number of christians living in the north often put on western style dresses. Nothern Nigeria is famous for the role it has played and continue to play in the Nigerian political scene, with 10 out of the 19 rulers since independence coming from the region among others.
Among the many good things about the region there must be a lot of negativity infact it is fair to say the region has witnessed more negativity from 1960 till date. Northern Nigeria holds at least 80 percent of the country's poverty rate, it's population mostly illiterate, it was also responsible for the killing of over three thousand Igbo living in the north a massacre that led to the Nigerian civil war. In this modern day the region has been shrouded in terrorism starting from Boko Haram, to banditry.
One would wonder why the region would be guilty of such inhumane and degrading activities when it should have concentrated on building the land with the vast amount of political power the region has enjoyed. It is fair to say that yes the south might not have political power but it is definitely better in all aspects when compared to the barren north, the political seat relishes on the illiteracy and lack of public participation that has plagued the region as means to fulfill it's wishes of stealing a lifetime worth of riches, riches that they did die and live behind.
To the majority of Nigerians the north is just a hot land filled with people who don't know how to speak English, the north even in it's dehumanizing nature still has a story to tell, a story that shall indeed captivate anyone who loves this country of ours. This blog shall serve it's purpose of telling Nigerians the wonderful story of a people who have suffered for decades to find their worth. From the days of Uthman Dan Fodio to the expedition of the British in Northern Nigeria, UpNorthBlog.com is all about the untold and unheard heritage of Northern Nigeria.
